6 Hours Giraffe Center, Karen Blixen, and David Sheldrick’s Wildlife Trust

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a flexible charity, established in 1977 to honor the memory of a famous Naturalist, David Leslie William Sheldrick. Founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya.

David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is where you come close to elephant calves. Daphne Sheldrick, as part of the David Sheldrick Conservation Foundation, rehabilitates baby elephants and other wildlife here at her home just outside of Nairobi National Park.

These babies have lost their mothers to poaching, death, injuries, on getting lost in the wild or other tragedies. Daphne and her dedicated staff raise them to be released back into the wild when they are ready. It’s worth visiting and witnessing the humanitarian care of wildlife.

The Giraffe Center was started by Jock Leslie-Melville, the Kenyan grandson of a Scottish Earl, when he and his wife Betty captured a baby giraffe to start a program of breeding giraffe in captivity at their home in Langata – home of the present center.

It was established to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe, giraffe camelopardalis Rothschild, which is found only in the grasslands of Africa.
By 1983 he had raised enough money to establish the Giraffe Visitor’s Center as a tourist destination in Nairobi. The center is also home to several warthogs which freely roam the area along with the giraffes. The main attraction for visitors is feeding giraffes from a raised observation platform.

Sheldrick Baby Elephant Orphanage which is open 1 hour daily. You can visit between 11am and 12 noon every day, and see the elephants being fed and playing. In addition, there is a keeper who will give a talk about the elephants, where they came from, how they are getting on, and how some of the previous orphans are progressing. You can get really close to the elephants.
The orphanage also takes in rhinos and if you are lucky, you will get the chance to see a young rhino. https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/

Each of these families may be composed of a man and two or more wives, since Samburu practice polygynous marriage. Married men are figures of authority in Samburu culture distinguished between junior elders, fire stick elders, senior elders, retired elders. An age set moves together through these stages. Women usually marry between the ages of 15 and 17–often to men 10-40 years their senior. Return to the lodge for lunch. Afternoon extensive visits and cultural dance at age 15-20 young men are initiated into an age set.

Day 7 Mt. Kulal Narraioca Supuko Campsite (FB – Full board)

Depart after breakfast with picnic lunch and armed rangers to the park. A day of excursions. This is one of Kenya’s most remote and least visited national parks. There is elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, wart hogs, Grevy’s Zebra (which is specific to northern Kenya), reticulated giraffe, hyena, and antelope. It also has a wealth of rare birds. Lake Paradise is an enchanting spot and a good place to camp, although there are no facilities here. Return to the hotel late afternoon.

Day 8 Chalbi Desert Kalacha Camp (FB – Full board)

After breakfast descend and drive to Mt. Kulal which dominates Lake Turkanas eastern horizon. A steep ascent to the north peak leads you through evergreen forest and verdant pastureland on the higher levels, after which you are confronted by the El Kajarata gorge which in effect splits the mountain in two, requiring a second ascent to reach Gatab. This small Samburu settlement nestled high up near the southern peak of Kulal affords extraordinary panoramic views of the desiccated landscape below, which you will have to traverse to finally reach South Horr.

Day 9 Lake Turkana Palm Shade Camp (FB – Full board)

We depart after an early breakfast through the scenic landscape of the arid north with views of picturesque hills. We arrive and camp at Kalacha, a small Gab bra settlement on the edge of the Chalbi
Desert. The Chalbi Desert is the harshest of the entire northwestern section and only the toughest of species survive. Its vast dunes and volcanic mountains are home to traditional tribes, the Rendille, and Gabbra, desert nomads who maintain a camel culture.

Day 10 Lake Turkana Palm Shade Camp (FB – Full board)

We depart early crossing the Chalbi Desert to Lake Turkana which is the largest desert lake in the world and extends for 288 kilometres up to the Ethiopian / Kenyan border. It is surrounded by volcanic rocks and desert. We arrive at our semi – permanent town /village camp where we have our traditional El Molo Huts; making it a perfect place to relax, protected from the scorching sun and heat characteristic of the climate of this remote area.

Day 11 El Molo Village

This day is spent relaxing, and you may visit the local lodge to swim or hire a boat to visit the surrounding area including the El Molo village the least populated tribe in Kenya. In addition, in the evening visit one of the Turkana Manyattas [optional] for traditional dances, an unforgettable experience under a star-studded sky so close you can almost touch it. (At an extra cost) Turkana, formerly L. Rudolf is now named after one of the tribes who live on its shores, and it is in this area that Richard Leakey uncovered the three-million-year-old fossils of ‘Homo Erectus.’ This prehistoric site is now known as the “Cradle of Mankind”.

Day 12 Maralal Yare Camel Camp (FB – Full board)

After an early breakfast we travel via the Horr Valley situated between Mount Nyiro and Ol Donyo Mara viewing the breath-taking scenery as we continue to climb on torturous, rocky hills to Maralal. Stop over for lunch at South Horr. Near Maralal is one of the most breath-taking scenes, the Losiolo escarpment, an endless stretch as land drops down to the Suguta valley. Maralal is the unofficial capital of the Samburu people and has a distinctly frontier feel about it, like something out of a ‘wild west’ movie.

Day 13 & 14 Lake Baringo Roberts Camp (FB – Full board)

Depart after breakfast to Lake Baringo via Mugie ranch. Looruk is one of the lakes on the edge of the Rift Valley. Scenic landscape with clear views of the Turgen Escarpment which is part of the western Rift Valley escarpment while on the East the Abe dares ranges establish themselves on the horizon.
